The Gallery 2015
by Franklin Collective
Opening reception NOV 2nd 7-10pm
Welcome to “The Gallery” 2015. Here, Franklin Collective calls into question the contemporary art gallery model by forming it into a living sculpture. For two weeks, 1196 Myrtle Avenue will be transformed into a fully immersive space that allows guests to unearth the typically shrouded interworking of an institution, in this instance the Contemporary Art Gallery.
While the “The Gallery” 2015 occupies the physical space as an embodiment of the brick and mortar functioning, the work exists simultaneously online through the standard digital and networked customs of art commerce and consumer participation, as it is these social entanglements that authenticate the model. Franklin Collective has taken the architecture of legal language and rendered it as a visual work of art. The Collective sees this as a crucial moment to continue the social and public unpacking of an institution which has undergone little critique and is almost universally accepted as an unquestioned standard for the distribution of art.
Franklin Collective was born in 2014 in the backseat of a Honda Civic on Highway 87 somewhere between Albany and New York City. Currently lives and works in New York City.
“The Gallery”, 2015 is located at 1196 Myrtle Avenue, between Willoughby and Suydam. The Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11AM to 6PM. Walk-ins welcome; appointments highly encouraged.
